Into the Alaskan Wild
Chapter 1

Nine Weeks Ago

August 12th

Undisclosed Location

The first vestiges of awareness for Gwyn Branham were bleak. For the life of her, she couldn’t remember where she was or how she got there. This was not an uncommon feeling for her. Years of addiction made the process of remembering much harder than it should be. Without opening her eyes, she felt the hardness beneath her and attempted to push her mind to work. Everything in her mind came up hazy. She opened her eyes to darkness, questioned whether she was still asleep, and closed them again. Instead, she focused on her body.

She attempted to stretch, becoming overwhelmingly scared by the burning sensations on her hands and feet as they came in contact with cold metal. Her eyes flew open, searching the darkness in confusion. Her hands and feet were only in contact with the metal momentarily. Fully aware now, she could see that she wasn’t in complete darkness. The only light came from a campfire too far away from her to notice much in her direct vicinity or provide any heat whatsoever.  Letting her eyes adjust, Gwyn became aware she was in a cage, silver, of course, since that was the only metal that could burn her. A silver cage seemed like an over-the-top expense. Yet, whoever put her there clearly knew she was a werewolf. They came prepared. She casually reached out to test the boundaries of the bars. Burning her fingers again didn’t feel great, but at least she knew how far she could go. Behind her back was a hard stone wall that leeched warmth from her.

She shivered and glanced around again, invoking her wolf this time. Her eyes laser-focused on the two figures that surrounded the campfire. They were not awake. She could hear their even breaths. The area's look seemed to lean towards being in a cave, but where she had no clue. She could see the entrance partly and a sliver of the night sky outside. Stacks of boxes were in random places. The one nearest to her had a tarp draped over it. There were no other features that could tell her much about her location.

Unsure of how she got into this situation, she leaned against the cold stone and put her arms around herself. Searching her memory, she closed her eyes and tried to think about the last time she was conscious. Flashes entered her brain, highlighting images of her on a bed, arms wrapped around her, a body on top of her, and sex. Sex with Lucas. She had been with Lucas at the Silvery Peak. The memories sent a wave of desire through her, heating her faster than the fire would have. Oh, Lucas. Her mind called out to him, knowing he could never answer.

Pushing again through her memories, she focused on the moments after leaving Silvery Peak. Taking a hit of cocaine in the parking lot. Sitting in her car crying alone. Feeling lonely despite leaving Lucas moments before. Leaving the parking lot, intending to meet up with her party friends. Stopping for gas and filling up the tank. Needing to pee, she entered the public restroom, relieved herself, and went to the bank. The bank teller gave her a look but handed her a large sum of cash. Heading out of town to an undisclosed location. Waiting as night fell. A car pulls up. Two men stepped out. Itching for drugs, she had spoken. They advanced on her, grabbing her. She tried to call out as something pierced the skin of her neck. Her eyes went wild, dancing between two men. A man with evil eyes, glowing with satisfaction, and another with kinder, softer eyes that looked almost apologetic. Then nothing.

The two men were her kidnappers, who lay next to the fire and slept peacefully as if nothing mattered. Gwyn opened her eyes and glanced toward them again. Wishing she could do anything to help herself. Their faces forever etched in her mind. They had a lot to answer for. A thousand scenarios went through her mind. One where she could save herself. One where she had the strength of a pack and the stamina to sustain her through battle. She once had that sensation when she tried Glass, but a situation afterward made her feel crazy. The reality of this situation, though, was entirely different. She didn’t have the strength or fortitude to save herself.

Years of drug abuse, alcoholism, and lack of proper nutrition did nothing for her stamina or strength. The lovely side effects of her werewolf blood made healing a breeze. The trade-off for her usage was she would rarely be at peak performance. It was a fact she had been okay with until this moment when she needed to improve. Even in the roughest of crowds and with all sorts of drugs running through her veins, she had been able to handle herself.

Her addiction got her into this mess. Had her desire to escape not been this high, she wouldn’t have been Jonesing for drugs. A hint of shame rose to the surface. In all these years, she had never allowed herself to feel shame. Joy. Heartache. Anger. Sadness. Depression, but never shame. Her actions, her choice of escape, had been hers and hers alone. A tear escaped the corner of her eye, which she brushed roughly away. Whatever these men wanted, she could only hope that her brother would take pity on her.

Her mind strayed back to Lucas. Knowing Lucas, he would probably sit her down and give her a talking-to about her penance for risky behavior. Risky behavior ended up with her in a cage in an unknown location without understanding why or who these men were. Being the sister of a pack leader afforded her money without much resistance. The only scenario that made much sense to her was that these were some dealer’s henchmen. The small town of Stoney Brook hosted many people, but essentially, it was the same small, rural town as many others around the country. Flashing as much cash as she did regularly could have made a dealer greedy. So greedy that he kidnapped her for ransom. Gwyn cursed herself for not being more careful. There were times she had flashed money as a status boost.

Fully awake now and as aware as she could be in this situation, she focused on taking stock of herself. Her body shook uncontrollably from the cold and, dare she think it, drug withdrawal. Each limb acted on its own, quivering to and fro. Her mind prepared for reality and for the aching process of becoming sober. She could feel the craving on the back of every thought. The need for drugs. The need to get high. An edge that made her feel weak and needy.

The edginess of withdrawal is something she loathed to feel. There was not one action she wouldn’t perform to make it go away. No matter what it was or with whom. Years of drug abuse and seeking never to feel this left her entirely overwhelmed by the sensation. A sense of panic came over her. Her eyes darted around the area, pursuing a way out. A way to escape. The drugs. She needed the drugs.

Her stomach lurched as the bile came up. She couldn’t stop it, opening her mouth to allow it to escape. Once the retching stopped, she laid down, gripping her empty belly. Sweat had begun to bead on her skin, almost echoing the pain. The pain crept in like a thief in the night. Her joints felt swollen and achy. Her head pounded. Her breathing increased to a frantic pace. Her stomach threatened to empty again, bringing an aching feeling inside her stomach. Gwyn knew nothing would come up, so she was left dry heaving.

Another unfortunate side effect of her drug use was the feeling of paranoia that followed her in every part of her life. It stayed right there even when she was safe and secure inside the compound or with Lucas. Right now, the paranoia led to the hallucinations. Floating images of her brother and of Lucas. The images flashed in and out, each saying something different. Calling her worthless. Calling her a failure. Telling her she was unworthy of love. Petty. Gross. Disgusting. A whore. A drain on their lives.

Gwyn could feel the tears streaming down her face, but she lifted herself and pushed into the rock wall. She covered her ears, screaming, “Please stop. Stop. You're mistaken. You are so wrong. I am none of those things. NONE. STOP.” Her body shook with each word, ignorant of anything around her.

“Hey, shut the fuck up, or I will make you,” one of the men yelled at her.

“What’s wrong with her?”

“We don’t get paid enough to deal with druggies,” the first one said.

“Got that right.”

All sounds began to intensify. Gwyn gripped her head to make it stop. She could hear the wind rushing against the rock. Footsteps of creatures shuffling away in the night. The men shifting in their sleeping bags sounded like sandpaper rubbing against her eardrums. Their speech rang in her head, making her crave silence.

The pain was too great. “Please. I need some dope. I will do anything…” she pleaded.

One of the men stood up and walked toward the cage. Each footstep echoed in her head, making her eyes swim. “Where do you think we would get dope from? We are in the middle of Alaska.”

“Do you think we should be telling her that?”

“What’s the harm? She could die at any time. Besides, what is she going to do? She is stuck in a cage.” The man leaned down and looked at her. The look on his face scared her. “Besides Jasper, what Eion doesn’t know won’t hurt him.”

Jasper? Gwyn attempted to shift through her recent memories for a man named Jasper. Nope. Nothing. The name didn’t ring a bell.  Did she upset a local drug kingpin and not pay? Did she insult someone at a bar? She couldn’t recall anything that would land her in a cage in the middle of Alaska. Risking it, she asked, “Alaska? What am I doing in Alaska?”

“Shut up like the dog-whore you are,” the man said with a kick to the cage.

Gwyn closed her mouth, knowing it would be better to be silent and watch than incur the wrath of someone who may be unpredictable. Her body was much too weak to get into any fights or physical altercations. The sensations of withdrawal kept pouring over her, increasing her physical pain.

Being clean in the past had only happened once. Cade, her brother, had demanded she sober up. They had found her in a crack house in Seattle, passed out on a used, torn mattress. Weeks of partying brought her to that place and that point. The resentment for her brother had made her say many nasty things to and about him. Gwyn could remember the same sensations, the same pain, the same overwhelming sense of fear and panic that coursed through her body. The difference was she wasn’t alone. Lucas had been there the whole time. Even as she got angry and upset at him, he held her as she shook. He caressed her hair to calm her. He watched her while she slept. He had been there. He was always there except for now. Now, she was alone. Truly alone. The feeling of loneliness she had before this moment paled in comparison.

As far as she could see, there were a few ways out of this situation. Death from an unassisted withdrawal or escaping her captors and finding a way to the nearest town. Or, worst case scenario, ending up in the Alaskan wilderness, unsure of where to go and either a bear or Mother Nature taking her out. Only one of those seemed like a good option to her. Being clean would allow her to pay attention and learn their behaviors. It was the only way. Calling on a strength she didn’t know she had, she mentally prepared herself. Holding onto her stomach, she curled on her side and closed her eyes. The sensations were almost too much to handle, but she would have to take it minute by minute.

The men settled back down to sleep. During a nasty episode of vomiting and hallucinations, Jasper came over and placed a cup of water near the bars of the cage. She whispered her thanks and reached for it. The shakiness of her hands caused burns to form from hitting the bars, but she needed the water to survive.

Being a werewolf meant the withdrawal symptoms would disappear in less time than a human. Still, six hours of the same intense pain as transitioning for the first time was crushing to her physically, mentally, and emotionally. Losing track of time, she couldn’t be sure how long it had been or how much time she spent unconscious during the withdrawal. Her memories kept her going.

The lasting memory floating before her was leaving Lucas and blowing him a kiss him over her shoulder. She fled her brother’s hotel and into the parking lot. Gwyn had always felt devastated when she left Lucas. Tears welled in her eyes as she thought about it. She wanted to be curled up in his arms and feel the safety and security he promised her. Gwyn couldn’t allow herself that. For some strange reason, she couldn’t commit to the man who had been with her for so many years and events. On and off. Whether she allowed herself or wanted to admit it, Gwyn knew without a doubt that he would be there. No matter what.

That need for safety and security was too much to bear sometimes. A burden that pushed Gwyn to medicate with drugs for a reprieve. Those feelings ripped through her body like a wildfire in ninety-mile-per-hour winds with embers floating in all directions, ready to catch the next thing on fire. Why she felt like her needs were a burden, she didn’t know, but nothing would have stopped her from leaving him that night. Her need for drugs had made her escape that cocoon. She was so tired of having this panicky, overwhelming feeling.

Honesty had never been a priority for her. Not even to herself. And yet, the sadistic part of her mind sometimes thought about ending it all. She had been invited to a party in Manhattan by some billionaire. The bright, bubbly girl she ended up being in public got her there. He had plans for her. Plans that involved spending days on end drugged up and sexed up. She indulged him. He draped her in diamonds and jewels. He paraded her in front of all of his friends. While on a high one night, she got tired of it all. She stood on the balcony of the ninety-second floor overlooking all of New York. The lights flickered in the horizon for as wide as her eyes could see. The noise was grating. She remembered not feeling anything – no remorse, no pain, no sorrow. All the things she figured she needed to feel to be alive. She climbed onto a coffee table in her stilettos, ready to jump. She looked down at the concrete below. Something inside her was happy to be ending it. To be done with everything. Just as she took the final lean forward, a set of arms pulled her back. The last thing she remembered was the thud into the floor of the balcony, the feeling of her lungs slamming against her back, and the air releasing from her lungs.

Gwyn shivered against the floor. That particular memory was always hard to remember. It made her recognize that she had a void inside. She couldn’t find a way to fill it despite years of trying. No person – not even Lucas. No item. No drug. Nothing. Another memory surfaced, making her shake her head. Gwyn had sat in the parking lot inside her car for quite a few minutes, enjoying the sensation the cocaine provided, lighting up her cortex with pleasure. The sensation was stunning and made her feel like Lucas was still inside her, pushing her to heightened euphoria. Awareness flowed through her even now. She sensed her skin flush.

Gwyn took a deep breath, opened her eyes, and shifted her body so that she was sitting up. Her mind wasn’t fully functional yet, but she went over the information she had already. Two men had kidnapped her in Stoney Brook, Tennessee, and got her to an undisclosed location in Alaska. The unnamed one said the middle of Alaska. She could only imagine how they were able to bring her here. The other man’s name was Jasper. There was a man named Eion who seemed to be in charge. And the unnamed man had a thing for going against his boss's words. Gwyn filed that away for future use. These guys must have had some help or a lot of resources.

Based on her previous experiences with withdrawal, she was less than twenty-four hours in. A flutter in her stomach made her focus. She placed a hand over the spot and tried to figure out where it was coming from but knew it didn’t have anything to do with the withdrawal. Leaning her head against the rock behind her, she shook her head. The last time she had been with Lucas, they had been unsafe. Risky behavior was her forte. As quickly as the sensation came, it disappeared, leaving her flummoxed. She didn’t know how long she had been here, but their coupling may have given her a real reason to live and find a way out of this situation.

Despite the shakiness and pain, Gwyn forced herself to sit up and start watching them. She would have to know everything about how they move, how they interact, and how they think to have any chance of getting out of this alive. She understood that Jasper already showed her kindness, so she would start working on him.

Clearing Things Up

Recently, I closed two of my social media accounts on Threads and Bluesky. I used to love Threads. It was a less stressful, less chaotic, less toxic version of Twitter. I had all the book girlies and writers on my feed. And then, suddenly they were gone. That beautiful feed got replaced by political attacks, weird ideologies, hate, pain, and sorrow.

I know. The algorithm, but I know I didn't click on those things that much. The climate we live in is a direct result in how that shifted.

I even took time to put banned words in so I would stop seeing certain posts, but they continued. Posts got through. And I started suffering mentally from it.

So I closed them!

Now, I was promoting on both Threads and Bluesky. That will change, but I still have Facebook, Tiktok (until they ban it again), Instagram, and this.

Sometimes we have to do what is good for our own mental health. And that's what this is...doing what is best for me.

It has been three days and I already feel much better and less agitated. I am still trying to connect with other writers. But, what I am doing is trying to take that added time and put it back into my writing.

Today alone I have edited and submitted a short story to a Tavern Fantasy anthology. I am not sure if I will get picked for that one, but it also required me to send in recipes which was an interesting addition. I will say I submitted herb roasted turkey legs and an apple stack cake recipe. If you are not Appalachian, an apple stack cake was one of the primary sweets that Appalachian people ate as it was difficult to get sugar so far up in the mountains. It uses apple sauce to sweeten between each layer of cake, which is super thin.

On top of that, I ordered my copy of A Sparkle of Woodland Magic, an anthology that I was accepted in. That story is about Azeria, the sixth daughter of Grandmaster Frostdenn, and her quest to refill her magic after being thrown through the portal and into the human realm.

The story I submitted today is about Seraphine Frostwhisper, a bounty hunter Fae who is looking for Azeria. There is a little back story about Seraphine's life and a new character who destroyed her whole Fae line, leaving, she suspects, only her alive. A Kirwine, a magical tree, picks her up and tries to take her to that new character and away from her target.

It was interesting to write and sort of summoned a desire to write a fantasy book, but I don't think I have time to create such an elaborate world right now. I have some self-induced timelines screeching forward. So I will leave you with this.

September 19th is the release of my next book. I can't wait to share it with you. Have a wonderful day.

Into the Meadow
Chapter 1

Cade Branham’s shoes clicked through the lobby in a distinct direction. His mood was volatile stemming from the phone call that brought him to the hotel on his day off. A glance indicated that the staff was casually avoiding being noticed which suited him fine. He had no desire to chastise anyone but the main source of his frustration. As the Alpha of the Branham pack, his justice had to be swift or else someone could choose to challenge him. The only person stupid enough was his younger sister and the source of his recent problems.

Stepping into the elevator, he waited as patiently as he could for the doors to shut. His mind drifted to the frustration of his sister. Gwyn was going to be the death of him. As the door shut, a slender woman slipped through and clicked the ninth-floor button. Quirking his eyebrow, he took a deep sniff and felt himself harden at the smell of her, vanilla and sandalwood. Deep below that scent was the earthy hint of Were that brought his intrigue up a notch. Curiosity got the better of him. He shifted so he could see as much of her as he could without arousing suspicion.

Her hair fell around her face with a gentle flow spiced with honey, caramel, and chestnut matching her honey-tinted skin. She glowed with a radiance that threatened to blind him. Her body was slender with muscle tone that hinted at a wolf held in restraint. His gaze drifted down from the curve of her neck, down her back, and landed on her rear, pert and round. His hands itched to cup her breasts as he imagined leaning forward and nipping her flesh. The ding of the elevator brought his attention back to the matter at hand.

The woman turned as she stepped out of the elevator and gave him a quick smirk, but what stopped him in mid-step was the pair of amethyst eyes full of suspicion and weariness. The wolf inside him became curious at the weariness but shook it off as he quickened his step in the opposite direction. There were only two reasons for a woman he has never met to be on the ninth floor. Either she was someone’s lover, or she was here for a job interview. Both of which made her off-limits. Every part of him hoped that it was the second option.

A crash sounded down the hall. He quickened his step further as he jerked open the door to face the problem. A lamp slammed against the wall next to him. Raising his voice, he shouted, “Enough.”

Gwyn immediately dropped the book she held in her hand and faced Cade. Her eyes, dark with rage, were spitting fire at him. Gesturing rudely, she demanded, "I want my money."

Stepping into the room, Cade pulled the door closed behind him. Debris from a broken and splintered chair littered his path. Stepping around it carefully, he kept his eyes on Gwyn never showing his back. His body hummed with energy with the wolf simmering beneath the surface to be let out. Gwyn had become a thorn in his side since he became Alpha. Without taking his gaze off of her, Cade asked the accountant who was shivering in a corner “Chadwick, have we given Gwyn her monthly stipend?”

“Yes, sir. She requested the full amount at the beginning of the month,” Chadwick squeaked out in submission to the more powerful wolves in the room.

Cade had recently found out that his little sister had a taste for hard drugs. The draw of modern life made her an unpredictable wolf with no care for the safety of others. What bothered him most is that she displayed a lack of care for herself. This problem was one in a long string of unresolved issues his father passed down. Becoming Alpha had not been an easy task despite his belief by Gwyn of the opposite. Cade leaned against the wall, tense and poised to react if she felt inclined to launch herself at him. “Gwyn, you have had your money for this month. It has only been two weeks. What could you have possibly spent all that money on?”

Her eyes immediately left his, unable to maintain the gaze. The movement alone would have admitted her defeat if she weren't so dangerous. Shrugging her shoulders, Gwyn answered “Just stuff. I need money, Cade. I can’t live with the amount you have given me. Under daddy’s rule, I got more.”

“Father spoiled you. We all took a pay cut so we could fix the problems within the pack and build a better future. You know this and agreed.” He stood and squared his shoulders, attempting to look larger. “I think it is high time you get back to the compound. Living here at the hotel has given you too much freedom. You can have a nice run in the woods and enjoy dinner with your parents. It will be relaxing.”

“Don’t do this to me, Cade," her voice becomes pleading. "Don't send me away to stay with them. The compound is so boring. There isn't much to do out there in the country. Besides, my friends are here in Stoney Brook."

“Gwyn, this is an order. I have my hands full with business and cannot continue to keep you out of trouble. If you do not have any money left over, you would be stuck in your room.” Cade pulled out his cell phone and dialed one of the exclusive pack drivers. Giving his order to pick her up in five minutes, he gestured toward the door. “Let me walk you out.” Part of him hoped that the gesture was the final word.

“Cade, I had high expectations of you, and you are disappointing me. I thought you would be fun like you were when we were children.” She walked to the door and jerked it open. Without waiting, she advanced toward the elevator.

The anger inside him rose in tandem amounts next to the undercurrent of lust he felt for the woman in the elevator. Sighing, he sent a sympathetic look toward the accountant. He didn’t pay the man enough to deal with her temper tantrums. “I am sorry this happened, Chadwick. Hopefully, she will remain at the compound until further notice. Bill the hotel for any damage you incurred to your office.”

“She is pretty scary when she is angry,” Chadwick said as he bent to pick up a piece of broken glass that looked ancient.

“I know, and I apologize on behalf of my family. Have a good day.” Cade stepped gingerly around a broken lamp and out into the hallway. With a few steps, he caught up with his sister before the elevator opened. Both of them stepped inside. He held his tongue until the doors closed. “Really Gwyn. I have enough to do than clean up after you all the time.”

Laughing with a quick burst, Gwyn leaned against the elevator wall and said, “I thought that was what brothers were for.”

“When will you grow up?” His voice was terse as his head began to pound.

“When you stop treating me like a child,” she responded. The anger she held was still simmering beneath the surface. “I am twenty-three.”

Cade had to prevent himself from rolling his eyes at the exclamation of her age. Gwyn would remain a girl until she was old. “Your age has nothing to do with this. For the record, I am not treating you like a child. I am treating you in a manner that fits how you act as a member of this pack. Now, I expect you to stay at the compound for the next six weeks.”

“Six weeks?” Her voice began to whine as she spoke, betraying the anger. “This isn’t about the money, is it? You just don’t want me here.”

“You are more than welcome to stay here after the six weeks are up, but right now I need you at the compound and out of trouble. There is too much riding on this red wolf deal,” he said as the elevator slowed to a stop. The doors opened in the lobby. Several guests were standing in line waiting to be checked in.

“Cade,” her tone changed to one of sisterly charm. “Don’t you remember those times when we use to run and play together in the woods? You use to tell me that you would always love me.”

Attempting to not strangle her at the ploy she was crafting, he grabbed her arm and pulled her toward the entrance of the hotel. “This is not an indication of whether I love you or not Gwyn. One day you will realize that I am doing this because I love you.”

She stopped talking as they stepped through the revolving doors and onto the sidewalk. The Audi A5 Sportback was sitting idle waiting for them. The driver hopped out and ran around to open the door. “Cade,” she attempted one more time.

Holding up a hand, he stopped her from speaking. He felt the need to shake her until her teeth rattled to help her understand but pushed the desire away. “Stop this. Gwyn, as your brother and as the Alpha, you will remain at the compound until I say you can come back.” Cade pushed her into the car seat.

Gwyn immediately turned toward him and balked. “You said six weeks.”

“You keep protesting.” Cade ignored the flash of anger she threw at him as he pulled the door from the driver’s hand. Slamming it, he turned toward the driver and said, “Keep an eye on her. Do not stop until you get to the compound. I will call ahead to have the gates open.”

“Yes sir,” said the driver before skirting the car and hopping into the driver's seat.

The window rolled down in a squeak. “You will regret this Cade.”

Without answering her challenge, he knocked on the roof of the car and watched as it pulled off carrying one of his worries away. His shoulders slumped, draining his energy. What he wanted to do was go up to his suite, climb into his king-sized bed, and fall asleep. Knowing that would not help his situation, he sighed and rolled his shoulders before moving toward the hotel. There was much work to be done before he would be able to relax.

As he entered the lobby and made his way back to the elevators, his mind drifted to the woman his wolf wanted him to take. Without speaking to her, there was something about her that beckoned him. As one of the only Were establishments in the south, young Weres came here looking for employment and a sense of belonging they couldn’t find in their pack. That side of the business was kept well hidden from the flocks of tourists that came to Stoney Brook. It also presented a deeper need for establishing the Branham pack within the area. That left Cade without the ability or the time to delve into finding a mate, no matter how much his wolf was demanding it.

The tourists came for the peace and solace of the mountains and didn’t leave disappointed. The view he sold to the tourists was not the only reason he chose to move the Branham pack here. It was the solitude of the mountains and the sparse population that called to him. It was one of the last places on the East coast that could boast a sparse population and wide-open mountainous terrain, perfect for a red wolf population. What it meant for the Were community that moved with him was the ability to shift without interference. The desire to be one with nature was so innate that it was a struggle to keep it in check on a good day.

Since the pack moved here, many had questioned his sanity and drive. His goals were numerous, but he was close enough to achieve the most important goal. A researcher and a government official were flying in to discuss the release of red wolves back into the Great Smokies – a species that no longer traversed these hills and valleys. If he were successful, the occasional howl of a wolf wouldn’t raise suspicion. That meant his pack would be safer.

As Alpha, he had to enact a law that prevented any pack member from howling while shifted. That meant that most of his pack didn’t want to shift for fear of breaking it. In Washington, this wouldn’t be a problem. Here, the pack members had to follow orders. With the majority of tourists enjoying the mountainous terrain, this was a monumental and difficult accomplishment; however, it was necessary to prevent human interest where it shouldn’t be.

When the elevator stopped on the ninth floor, he walked to the left and away from the original goal of his office. Following her scent of vanilla and sandalwood, he stopped in front of the hiring director's office. The blinds were open, allowing him to view her profile against the mountains. She was exotically beautiful with high cheekbones and luscious lips. Part of him wished she would turn those amethyst eyes his way again. Instead, he focused on the way her body accentuated her speech.

The sound of footsteps brought his attention, begrudgingly, to his secretary. “I saw you come off the elevator. You have a call on line 2.”

“Is it important?” he asked hoping that the caller was not Gwyn. Her relentless troublemaking meant it was unlikely that she would accept his orders without having to bother him every hour.

“Yes, sir. Mr. Newburn and Mr. Brent have called.”

      “Conference?”

“Yes, sir. What should I tell them?”

Cade pulled his eyes away from the beauty and moved down the hallway with a gait of a frustrated man and a wolf screaming out to transition and mark her. He had wanted to barge into that office to be close to her and have her eyes on him. He wanted to display his power, which was the last thing he needed right now. Love would ruin his concentration on building his pack’s success.

His secretary stopped at her desk as he walked into the doorway of his office. “Don’t interrupt me for twenty minutes.”

      “Yes, sir.”

Cade walked in and shut the door behind him. The view out of his office was the best in the building except for the penthouse one floor above which had a 360 view of the mountains. Ever since he became Alpha, he felt there was no possible way for him to relax. There was such a huge weight on his shoulders, but the view had the surprising ability to take the edge off. Striding to the desk, he sank into the chair and picked up the phone. Clicking the line 2 button, he answered swiftly. “Carl and Doug, I was waiting for your call.”

Into the Meadow - Anniversary Post

 Hello Readers!

I am so happy and excited to share this post with you. It has been 10 years this month since I became a published writer as Cristie Noll. Into the Meadow was published in March 2015. I am not sure where the time has gone, but I am so glad it has brought me to this point.

For those of you who don't know, Into the Meadow is my first novel. It follows the characters Sophia and Cade as they go through all the trials and tribulations of their lives and love.

I wanted to share some stuff with you about Into the Meadow.

It had two covers. The first one is one I still love, but I went in a different direction when I had Into the Alaskan Wild (BOOK 2) ready for publication. So I ordered a new cover to match.

Old Cover

New Cover

The description did change over time, but due in part from the familiarity I had with the whole Running Rampant gang of characters and the Roaring Fork universe!

Description

Sophia Barlow was on the run with secrets that threatened the man she came to love. Determined to face her past, she will do anything to protect Cade. Cade is the Alpha of the Branham pack and resort owner, with one eye on the future and the other on the newest outsider to arrive in Stoney Brook. He will face anything to have Sophia – for better or worse.

Cade Branham’s rise to power as Alpha wasn’t unexpected. When he moved the pack from Seattle to the tourist town of Stoney Brook, the Great Smoky Mountains didn’t seem like a big enough place for his big dreams. When a beautiful outsider arrives at his resort looking for a job, all thoughts on the future turn to her. Sophia’s secrets threaten to tear them apart, but denied isn’t what Cade wants. Sophia became his pursuit. Come hell, high water, or a sadistic former pack leader, she would become his mate. That was the only future he wanted.

Sophia Barlow had a lot of secrets that could end her life. She didn’t know where life would take her before arriving in Stoney Brook. Sophia had thought it would be a stopping point to earn some money. Surprised there was a werewolf resort in town, she applied for the only available job entirely unsuitable for her skillset. One fateful moment in the elevator, she came face-to-face with the man who made her picture a real future. Kids. House. Happiness. Love. She wanted him. One night was all she wanted before disappearing into the night, never to be seen again.

One sexy Alpha. One night scented meadow. One woman seeking love. And that was the biggest mistake. One night told her all she needed to know. She would do anything to protect Cade and have a future with him. So she left without saying a word to face her past.

Will Cade and Sophia have the happy life they want? Will Sophia be able to face her past and come back to the man of her dreams?

Setting

Roaring Fork is the setting for the Running Rampant series and A Long Way Home. Roaring Fork is a ficitious town in the Great Smoky Mountains. If you have ever been around Gatlinburg, TN or the Sevier County/Cocke County area, that is what Roaring Fork is based on. The mountainous terrain. The back roads. The winding curves. The sweet, closed off people. And the insanity of tourist traffic that makes life HELL in summer.

That place is the home of my heart and where I was born. The magic of those mountains wove themselves INTO my heart and soul.

I hope that you enjoyed this small peek into the book Into the Meadow on it's 10 year anniversary. I am so glad to share it with you. If you are interested in a Signed Paperback, you can view it HERE.

Only His Preview - Patreon Exclusive

 Hello Readers.

Only His is a story that I originally had up on Amazon Vella, which is now no longer available. The story started out being a weekly habit forming story that would push me to get words in every day and have a writing goal for publication every week. While the process of that is sometimes harrowing, I didn't mind the push.

Only His was never finished to completion in Amazon Vella. I was too late in the game to get any sort of traction. So, I am finishing the story on Patreon on a bi-weekly posting schedule. With that in mind, I thought I would share some information.

The Cover

Description

Adriana Davis knows two things – she deserves better than a cheating boyfriend, and the barista at the local cafĂ© is delicious enough to eat. Life is changing too fast, especially when her ex can’t let her go. With her head spinning, Adriana doesn’t want to give up on love when Hudson has his eyes on snagging her.

Hudson Mains is happy to hear that Adriana’s boyfriend is out of the picture, so he can make a move. She is beautiful, articulate, and downright cute as a button in his book. When her ex boyfriend can’t seem to let her go, the anger to stake his claim and protect her is almost too much. And then, everything in his life starts crumbling beneath his feet.

Can they navigate the emotional blows to forge a life together? Is it all too much? Or is the drama going to blow their chance at a relationship?

Entering Edit Mode

Hello Readers. I am pleased to announce that I am currently in editing mode on my sixth novel. All the good information like cover reveals, pre-order information, and description will be available at a later date.

What I can tell you is that the story is a contemporary romance. It will be part of a stand-alone series of three books. The series title is The O'Connors. There are three siblings: Lucas, Liam, and Riley.

Lucas and Liam are the O'Connor Brothers and Riley is their rambunctious younger sister.

Book 1 is Lucas and Anya's story.

What I can tell you is that Lucas is a game designer.

Anya is a barista by day and an aspiring writer by night.

Both of them have baggage. LOTS OF IT.

I wrote the majority of this book during Nanowrimo in 2023. It's been sitting in my to edit list for a while. 2025 is going to be the year of publication. The manuscript on 8.5x11 paper is 231 pages, which is pretty big at 307 pages without any changes.

Currently, I know the titles of all three books in the O'Connors series. They will be shared later as I release them though! So excited to share them with you later.

Please stay tuned for more info on Lucas and Anya.

If you are interested in, I have a Patreon account if you would like to join. There will be exclusive stories on Patreon like Only His available bi-weekly. Chapter 1 is available now. You do not have to pay a fee to access the First Chapter of my books or the Patreon Exclusive stories.

I have also opened a signed book store on my website: https://cristienoll.weebly.com/cristienollshop.html
